Roughly 20 years ago, Alan and Jodi Decker became immersed in the art of pond building.
The company began in 1990 as a design to build landscaping service. Quickly, it earned a reputation for work perfection and excellent customer service.
Several years later, the Decker’s wanted to be able to offer quality nursery items to complement their landscaping designs. So, they added a greenhouse operation. The company, now Decker’s Landscaping & Nursery, Inc., was able to offer their customers quality plants, shrubbery, and flowers) to add to their already outstanding designs.
In 1994, Alan understood that the company should be channeling themselves into a suitable niche. Alan always had a strong appreciation for the outdoors and felt that water features were a natural fit. Jodi kept noticing how their customers were always asking them pond-related questions regarding installation or supplies. They began to think that water features were a logical extension of what they were already doing.
After their first pond installation, the Decker’s were completely sold on the idea of adding ponds to their service offerings. The sound and movement of flowing water is very soothing and have a way of attracting wildlife. Alan knew that a backyard pond would be a perfect place for customers to escape after a long day.
People can come home after a long day, sit down by their water feature and in 15 minutes decompress and recover from the stress of the day. All these aspects contribute to the pond ‘lifestyle’.
Alan and Jodi realized their relationship with their customers deepened. People would love to just come in with cup of coffee or the grand kids to sit and watch the fish. Customers would chat with the Decker’s about how nice it was to have something in their backyards that helped them to relax and reconnect with their kids or grand kids. Customers were amazed that when entertaining everyone would gravitate to the water feature.
As the Decker’s tell it, “No one gets consumed with excitement about a retaining wall or a patio. Few wake up on Saturday morning revved up to trim or mow. But a pond, a living ecosystem, this is an interactive landscape.
The understanding of how powerful ponds and water features became in the lives of their customers only intensified the Decker’s commitment to water installations.
The Decker’s began going to the Aquascape headquarters in Chicago 3-4 times a year. They invested time and effort to become fully trained in pond building and ecosystem management. The more they learned, the more passionate they became, and the greater the satisfaction from their customers. Currently, building certified Aquascape ponds constitute 90% of the company’s business.
The Decker’s become Certified Aquascape Contractors for several reasons. The most important is that the Aquascape method creates ecosystems the way nature intended. Everything filters through rock, gravel, and plants just like in any mountain stream or backyard creek. Since they are set up correctly, Aquascape ponds require a very low level of maintenance.
The Decker’s also appreciated the simplicity of the Aquascape system. After going to several water installation conferences but were put off by the over-complication of other pond systems. Keeping it simple is why Aquascape ponds work better than others. As a result, the Decker’s felt they could readily stand behind Aquascape products.
Adding a Decker’s water feature makes your landscape interactive. Their water features include ponds, pondless waterfalls, bog filtration, wetlands, small decorative water features, rain barrels and rain water harvesting systems. Decker’s continues to provide a full landscape design including landscape plantings, retaining walls, walkways, patios and outdoor fire pits to complete their customers’ outdoor living spaces.
In 2003 to support their customer’s needs, Alan and Jodi opened their retail pond shop. The pond shop offers everything needed for a successful pond. These include pond kits for the do-it-yourselfer, liners, pumps, underwater lights, and a full line of pond accessories. They offer the area’s largest selection of aquatic plants, as well as a wide variety of fish (koi, comets, shubunkins, snails & tadpoles) and fish products.
In 2014 the Decker’s opened a 2nd location in Latham NY. A retail water garden store that serves Albany, Saratoga and Rensselaer counties. Alan and Jodi invite you to visit one of their two locations in order to enjoy their 14 on-site display water features. Remember to stop by and introduce yourself to Alan, Jodi and their team.
